The Lanyard poem

“ The Lanyard” by Billy Collins is about a young boy who was away at camp. He described how he learned to make a lanyard in which he was going to give to his mother. The poem was very descriptive with the colors he made the lanyard and the way he braided it. The lanyard was sort of boxy and was made with red and white string.  I thought it was kind of funny because he didn’t even know what a lanyard was for. The poem said “I had never seen anyone use a lanyard or wear one, if that’s even what you did with them.”  Even though he didn’t know what it was for, he had his mother in mind and just kept crossing the red and white strings.

As he was making this lanyard he mentions how his mother gave him life, and milk from her breast and all he has in return is this lanyard. He is realizing that he could never repay his mother in any way close to what she had done for him. He almost sounded disappointed when he expresses that she supplies him with everything he needs and he says here is your lanyard. There is almost a sense of sarcasm in the way it is worded. His mother gave him a heart beat, strong legs and bones and a breathing body, and all he can do is repay her with a Lanyard.

I could relate to this poem because I can remember coming home from school with a little gift that I made for my mom. I never really though of it in a way or repaying her for all the things she has supplied me with, but this  has opened my eyes. I love my mom to death and if I could ever repay her for all the things she has done for me, I would do it in an instant.

I like how you pointed out the author did not know what a lanyard really was used for. Before I read this poem, I had to look up the definition of lanyard.

I also can remember making arts &crafts and bringing them home to my mom. I never really thought of them as anything but a thing I was assigned to make in school. Now that I am grown up and have read that poem, I see what my mom saw. I am as well going to open my eyes and start doing little things to show my appreciation. As a start, I am going to send my mom this poem.

I like how you described this poem. You brought to my attention that Collins  wasn’t sure what a lanyard was but he still had his mother in mind.  He was just thinking about his mother, and everything she done for him.

Thinking back to elementary school, I can also relate to this poem. I can remember making all kinds of arts and crafts in school and bringing them home for my mom. No matter what it was she always adored it. I also never saw it has a way of repaying my mom for what she has done for me, but the poem has made me think differently about it.

I like how you mention about the details that Mr. Collins uses in his poem.  I looked back and when I read it again it is very easy to imagine his entire story from the details he gives.  The details help make it easier to imagine how the boy felt and everything behind the story.  You are right there is no way for a person to repay their mothers for all that they have done.  I also liked the fact that you mentioned that you didn’t make the things that you did so to try and repay your mom you just did it.  That is just how your mother is to you, they do all those things not trying to repay anything, they do it because they love you and that’s all you really need.
